Humanae Vitae (On Transmitting Human Life) - Nearly 40 years ago, in the summer of 1968, Pope Paul VI issued the encyclical Humanae Vitae. It was the seventh encyclical in the sixth year of his pontificate, and, although he reigned for another ten years, it was the last encyclical he wrote.
Humanae Vitae is perhaps the most contentious and well-known papal intervention in the history of the Church. Promulgated at the height of the "sexual revolution" in the western world, Humanae Vitae reiterated the constant teaching of the Church on the duty of married persons to responsibly transmit human life and the incompatibility of contraception with that duty. The reactions have continued for almost an entire generation. However, the response has not been completely negative. Humanae Vitae also spawned an explosion in theological discourse in defense of its teachings, not only among theologians and bishops, but also through the teaching authority of Pope John Paul II, whose writings have made the teachings of Humanae Vitae accessible to the modern world.
